A GEORGE III BASKET-HILTED CAVALRY BACKSWORD PRESENTED TO PRINCE HENRY IN 1932

With fullered blade double-edged towards the point and stamped 'Hounsloe me Fecit' on both sides at the forte, iron hilt with half-basket guard of characteristic pattern, involving a pierced slotted double shell-guard joined to both a side-bar and to a knuckle-guard, the latter interrupted by a slotted small panel (two looped bars possibly removed from the rear of the guard), chiselled lion's head pommel, and original shagreen-covered grip bound with copper wire, in its original iron-mounted leather scabbard, the locket with 20th Century presentation inscription on the reverse (light pitting throughout, the leather surface worn); and a French model 1866 bayonet for the Chassepot rifle, dated 1867, in its scabbard with frog

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: 'This sword was given to the Heston & Isleworth Urban District Council by W.H. Fenton, Esqr., J.P., C.C., for presentation by them to H.R.H. Duke of Gloucester, K.G., October 3rd 1932'.

Swords of this type were carried by the 1st Troop of the Horse Guards.
