Nuremberg: Paul Lochners, 1729.

Nunzer, 6 engraved headpieces, the first with a portrait of the author, and 6 initials, half-title. Contemporary German sprinkled calf, spine blindstamped in compartments (lacking clasps, head and foot of spine chipped, a trifle rubbed).
FINE COPY OF THE BEST EDITION of this sumptuous German horse book, first printed in 1588 and published also in 1609-10 and 1624. Here the text has been entirely brought up to date, and the book arranged in a more systematic order by Valentin Trichter. The plates which are new to this edition depict different breeds of horses, dressage, military exercises, anatomy, bits, caparisons, tournaments and processions. One of the latter illustrates three processions with exotic animals -- an elephant, an ostrich with a rider, zebras, camels and a rhinoceros -- while another shows horses drawing magnificent baroque sleighs. Brunet III, 1144; Berlin Kat. 1402; Nissen ZBI 2542.
