SPENCER, Thomas (1700-1763) and others. [34 Portraits of Race Horses with their Pedigrees, Achievements, etc., 1740-1753.] London: T. Butler and John Cheny, [1740-1751].

Oblong 2°, (330 x 455mm). 33 engraved and etched plates only by H. Roberts and others, additional titles in neat manuscript hand and other annotations in ink. (Lacks the plate of Victorious, browning and light spotting to some plates.) Contemporary marbled boards with calf spine and morocco gilt lettering piece on upper board, manuscript index on inside lower board (rubbed and rather worn). Provenance: The Right Hon. Henry Bowes Howard, 11th Earl of Suffolk & Berkshire, 1750 (1686-1757, bookplate; gift to his son:) - William Howard, Viscount Andover (inscribed 'This Book given to Ld Andover by Suffolk 1756').

A FINE AND VERY RARE SET OF RACING PRINTS. Sparrow notes its rarity in 1922, 'rare no doubt, because so many of the copies have been broken up in order that the prints might be sold one by one' (W.S. Sparrow, British Sporting Artists). Thomas Spencer may be regarded as a close follower of his contemporary, James Seymour; in fact, his manner of painting is in some ways more engaging than Seymour's since, despite the sometimes stiff portrayal of grooms and attendants, his horses themselves appear more fluid. Siltzer 389; Lane 168; Sparrow 77.
