GOSDEN, Thomas (1780-1840)--Izaak WALTON (1593-1683) and Charles COTTON (1630-1687). The Complete Angler, [?edited by Samuel Bagster]. London: Mercier and Chervet for Samuel Bagster, 1808.

8° (242 x 148mm). Half-title with woodcut vignette by Berryman after Craig and title ruled by hand in red and black. Engraved frontispiece and 14 plates by P. Audinet after Wale and George Samuel, and 2 engraved plates of music. Woodcut and engraved illustrations, the engraved illustrations by Audinet. With final advertisement leaf 2H2. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 25 plates, one folding, 52 prints mounted in the margins as tailpieces, one part-title leaf, and a 2-page manuscript index to the extra-illustrations by Thomas Gosden bound in before the half-title. (Variable light spotting.) Mid-19th-century blind-tooled russia over part-bevelled wooden boards [by Gosden], boards with central 'IW CC' monograms within frames after the title of the first edition, piscatorial motif cornerpieces, board-edges gilt, gilt-tooled turn-ins, green silk endleaves, brass fore-edge clasps, spine gilt in compartments, gilt edges, 20th-century cloth box (extremities lightly rubbed, one pin lacking from clasps, rebacked retaining original spine). Provenance: 'IG' (monogram bookplate).

SEVENTH, FIRST BAGSTER, EDITION, LARGE-PAPER OCTAVO STATE. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED AND BOUND BY GOSDEN. This copy was grangerised and bound in the second quarter of the 19th century by Gosden, who also added a manuscript index of the additional plates. Many of the plates and engravings that have been added were published by Gosden or depict pictures in his collection, and are mounted proof impressions on india (some are also annotated and/or initialled by Gosden), and include some of those used for the 1822 and 1825 editions illustrated with engravings published by Gosden. As a binder, the majority of Gosden's work was executed on sporting books, particularly The Compleat Angler, and, although the binding is lettered 'Gosden's Illustrations' on the spine, it is not signed. Bagster's 1808 edition was printed in three states: octavo, large octavo and quarto (of which the latter is very rare, due to the destruction of most copies by fire). Brunet V, cols. 1412-1413; Coigney 18; Lowndes 2828; Westwood and Satchell p. 224.
