RABY HUNT -- Earl of Darlington's Fox-Hounds. Operations of the Raby Pack, in the Years 1787 [-1826]. London: H. Reynell [C.H. Reynell], 1804 [-26].
39 parts bound in 2 volumes, 4° (264 x 202mm). Letterpress table in each part. (Occasional browning, spotting and staining.) Contemporary blue straight-grained morocco, flat spines divided into 6 compartments, 2 for the title in gilt, the others, in volume I, containing small tools of astronomical instruments, a bird perched on a quiver of arrows, a helmet atop a spear and a sabre, etc., and in volume II, agricultural instruments, a stag and a cornucopia, wide border round sides, in volume I, of alternating urns and fleurons with Prince of Wales feathers at corners, wide stylised border round volume II, gilt edges (head and foot of spine and upper joint of volume I slightly rubbed). Provenance: M. Powlett (contemporary signature on an endpaper) - C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 15 July 1946, lot 2380).
SCHWERDT COPY. VERY RARE PRIVATELY PRINTED FIRST EDITION of an almost complete run of records of this famous hunt. The Earl of Darlington, subsequently the Marquess and Duke of Cleveland, continued to hunt, and to publish an account of his hunting, until 1839 when, at the age of seventy-three, he retired, noting 'Thus ends a season better for sport than the former year but unfortunate in many respects but in none so much as my own want of health, which obliges me to decline and relinquish my pack, to which I had been attached for fifty-three seasons'. Bound in after the 1803-04 account is Howell Wood ... A New Hunting Song, London: Henry Reynell, 1804. Included in the lot is a duplicate of this and the Duke's records for 1828-29, 1829-30 and 1837. cf. Schwerdt II, p.121. (6)
