AN EXOTIC AND HIGHLY-PRIZED MAGNUM OF LE PIN 1982
LE PIN
Le Pin has acquired a reputation as the most hedonistic Pomerol and a competitor to Pétrus since its acquisition by the Thienpont family, long time owners of Vieux-Château-Certan. They completed refashioned the nearly defunct property, greatly reducing yields and speeding up and controlling the fermentations as well as macerations. Le Pin sits ideally in the highest aspect of Pomerol with iron rich gravel soils. The expressive and exotic character of Le Pin is heightened in the winery through the unusual practice (for Bordeaux) of using new oak casks for the malolactic fermentation of the wine. This is extremely labor intensive and can be only done on small estates such as Le Pin where the production is scant 600 cases. The results are a massive wine of incredible richness and concentration, yet creamy butter smoothness.
Le Pin--Vintage 1982
Pomerol
Lightly glue stained label
"Displaying no signs of wear and tear, or advanced maturity, the 1982 Le Pin has been an opulent, flamboyant, thrill-a-second sipper for over fifteen years. This dense opaque garnet/purple-colored wine boasts a huge, smoky, jammy, kirsch, blackberry, and cherry-scented nose, an opulent texture, low acidity, layers of fruit and glycerin, and a thick, intense, powerful yet velvety-textured finish. This wine should continue to drink well for a decade. As it sat in the glass, notes of roasted coffee and toasty oak also emerged. This is Bordeaux at its most ostentatious and exotic." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #129 (Jun 2000)
