Arthur Burdett Frost was one of America's foremost illustrators and an important painter of sporting scenes. He is also well-known for his still life and landscape paintings, which demonstrate the influence of his teachers Thomas Eakins and William Merritt Chase. The present work was painted while the artist was living at Prospect Hill Farm, a small estate outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
