Lot Essay

The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Dr Ursel Berger of the Georg Kolbe Museum. The other cast is held in the collection of the Georg Kolbe Museum, Berlin.

It appears that this cast was sold to the Manchester collector, T.D. Barlow, at a exhibition in Flechteim in 1931. His intention was to donate this work to the Tate Gallery but, for reasons which remain unclear, this did not take place.
