A student of the Academy Brera in Milan, Alfredo Pina (d. 1966) was heavily influenced by Auguste Rodin. After working in Rodin's studio, Pina established his own atelier in Sceaux, France in 1909.
The artist debuted at the 1912 Salon exhibiting a bronze bust titled Vieux Romain and another study titled La Danse.
During the First World War, the artist took up residence in Montpellier where, in 1920, he modelled the first of three versions of a bust of Beethoven. In the same year, the additional versions and the model for the present bust of Wagner were completed. Rodin's influence is unmistakable in each version and particularly evident in the present lot where the artist intentionally sacrifices detail and accuracy for emotive impact. Pina's celebrated bust of Beethoven now resides in the Musée Fabre in Montpellier.
