Lot Essay
The present lot is sold with a photograph (fig. 1) inscribed in Russian and Armenian with a personal message of good luck from the artist to the composer on the reverse.
Boris Parsadanian (1925-1997) was an Armenian composer who studied under Litinskii at the Studio of the Armenian House of Culture before graduating from the Gnessin School in Moscow in 1950. After moving to Estonia, Parsadanian studied composition under Heino Eller at the Tallinn conservatory and swiftly gained a reputation as both a talented composer and conductor. Married to an Estonian, Parsadanian's links to Armenia and Estonia are shown in the present portrait by the suggestion of Mount Ararat and the Baltic sea in the background.
In addition to the composers Evgenii Svetlanov and Dmitrii Shostakovich, Parsadanian was close friends with Sar'ian after whom his Symphony No. 2 was named.
