The en plein enamel plaque on this kovsh depicts the painting Three Bogatyrs which was painted by Victor Vasnetsov in 1898 and is now located in the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow. Bogatyrs were medieval Russian epic heroes and warriors and the three bogatyrs depicted in Vasnetsov's painting are perhaps the most famous Russian bogatyrs, Alyosha Popovich, Dobrynya Nikitich and Ilya Muromets. Each was known for a specific heroic trait. Alyosha Popovich was known for his bravery, Dobrynya Nikitich for his courage, and Ilya Muromets, who was believed to be the greatest of all bogatyrs, was known for his integrity, his spiritual and physical power and for fierce dedication to his homeland.
