Lot Essay

Born in Abfaltersback, Austria, Simon Troger (d.1768) served his apprenticeship during the first quarter of the 18th century, working under several mentors including Nikolaus Moll in Innsbruck. After two years in Munich, he established a workshop in nearby Haidhausen, executing commissions for illustrious patrons such as Maximillian III, Elector of Bavaria. Troger's work typically contrasted dark woods with the luminosity of polished ivory and this style enjoyed a popular revival during the later 19th century.
