Lot Essay

These chandeliers have been restored under the supervision of Robert Sherlock, F.S.A. He dates this one narrowly by comparing the baluster stem with the identical ones of chandeliers dated between 1701-23. the branches are similar to those at Lancaster (1717), St. Mary-le-Wigford and Frampton, Lincolnshire (1722). The stepped scrolls are identical tothose formerly at Prees, Shropshire (1717) and the plain ball tends to be before 1720.

This chandelier is suspended from a ring which is the correct design, but a replacement, taken from a London-made chandelier of 1720 at St. Mary-le-Wigford, Lincoln where it can be seen in combination with this dove; this is also an aftercast from an example at the church of St. Andrew, Milbourne St Andrew, Dorset of 1712.
