Lot Essay

The 'Wren's Nest' was a pub at the foot of a field known as the strawberry beds on the Castleknock Estate of Sir George Brooke Bart. (1849-1926). His son John (eventually Captain J. Brooke DSC, RN) and his daughter Emily (eventually Mrs H.S. Persse, wife of the famous trainer) both teenagers, used to foregather down at the Wren's Nest in order to smoke Woodbines, well out of sight of their father. The artist, Letitita M. Hamilton was a cousin of the Brookes.
