F.S. ASHLEY-COOPER
Curiosities of First-Class Cricket [1730-1901]

London: Edmund Seale, 1901. 8vo., interleaved, original green cloth gilt, limitation label on front pastedown (joints rubbed). Provenance: William Clafton -- G.B. Buckley (bookplates; occasional ms notes and corrections in his hand).

NO. 97 OF 100 COPIES signed by the author. A trade edition was also published simultaneously (see lot 35). This copy has an important provenance, having belonged to the collector, William Clafton, and the cricket historian, G.B. Buckley. Although based upon a series of articles written for Cricket, beginning on 22 December 1898 in Ashley-Cooper's column "At the Sign of the Wicket", the work was revised and enlarged for publication in book form. It starts with London v. Kent in 1730 and ends with New South Wales v. Victoria in February 1901. Though just twenty-four, the author dedicated it "to my friend Charles Frederick Adamson in remembrance of thousands of happy hours spent together on the cricket-fields of England". Wynne-Thomas p. 19; Padwick 99.
