F.S. ASHLEY-COOPER
W.G. Grace, Cricketer: A Record of his Performances in First-Class Matches
London: John Wisden, 1916. 4to, publisher's brown cloth gilt (corners slightly bumped, stains on back cover). Provenance: the descendants of W.G. Grace (sold by Bearne's, Exeter, Important Cricketing Books from the Collection of W.G. Grace, 11 July 1996, lot 9).
PUBLISHER'S HARDBACK COPY, PRESUMABLY PRESENTED TO GRACE'S WIDOW. Published the year after the cricketer's death at Mottingham, Kent, on 23 October 1915, standard copies were issued in paperback. The Wisden hardback binding suggests that this was probably a presentation copy to Mrs Grace from the publishers or possibly the author. Wynne-Thomas p. 24 describes the book as: "an innings by innings record of W.G. Grace's career in first class cricket, with a short essay at the start of each season and sundry comments on individual matches as they appear chronologically"; Padwick 7571.
