twelve album leaves in ink and colour on silk, each bearing a cartouche on the mount identifying the episode from the novel - each leaf 19½in. x 14½in. (49.5cm. x 36.8cm.), the images 15½in. x 12½in. (39.4cm. x 31.7cm.), 18th century

Jin Ping Mei is the first full length erotic novel in China. It is traditionally ranked as one of the four great novels of the Ming period. The actual author of the novel is not known but the work draws on a great many sources, including the short story, the drama, the popular song and Buddhist recitations. The novel is presented in episode fashion and the story centres around the amorous exploits of the members of the household of Ximen Qing. The title is taken from the names of three of the main female protagonists, Golden Lotus, Vase and Plum Blossom.

These twelve album leaves were originally part of a set of two hundred. The novel is made up of one hundred chapters. Each chapter has two sub-titles and the album contained two illustrations from each chapter. The twelve were purchased by Mr Franklin when he was based in Formosa.
There are eight further leaves in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City and four have been gifted to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

The twelve leaves illustrate the following chapters:
