Lot Essay

The ruins of Battle Abbey in East Sussex provided a popular subject for topographers in the late 18th Century. Thomas Girtin (1775-1802) executed a version of the present drawing, but in coloured wash and without the figure (Private Collection). These watercolours were presumably executed at the same time, circa 1795. Another view of Battle Abbey by Turner is listed in A. Wilton, The Life and Work of J.M.W. Turner, London, 1979, p. 489, no. 56a.
