Lot Essay

This unusual 'irregular star-shaped' set was created specifically for H.R.H. The Princess Margaret, and it is interesting to note the use of synthetic Gilson emeralds within the design. Buying directly from Gilson, John Donald had access to some of the newest synthetic gems on the market, and incorporated these new materials into his designs for creative effect. As with all of the John Donald pieces that the Princess commissioned, the importance of each jewel lay not so much in the intrinsic value as the correct artistic effect created by way of interesting materials and techniques.
