Lot Essay

In the winter of 1961-62 Grant stayed at San Roque, Cadiz, in the house of his great friend Edward le Bas. Fellow guests and visitors included Frances Partridge, Basil and Frances Creighton and Diana Holman Hunt. The weather was exceptionally wet and Grant mostly painted interiors and portraits. The present work is almost certainly the salon of the house.
