Lot Essay

'An early photograph of Philpot in his studio at 14A Cheyne row, which he rented from 1906 to 1909, shows him holding a plaster cast of this work, the original title of which is unknown. Although The Wrestlers is probably Philpot's first attempt at sculpture, it is accomplished in both conception and execution, and it is possible that the anatomically-correct detailing resulted from occasional visits by Philpot to wrestling matches' (see exhibition catalogue, Glyn Philpot 1884-1937: The Bronzes, Leighton House, London, 1986, p. 4).
