ALBUM AMICORUM of Georg David MÜLHEUSER. An album including inscriptions from academics, especially philosophers and theologians, or churchmen, chiefly at Basle but also Geneva, Lausanne, Berne, Strasburg and elsewhere, 1622-1633, including inscriptions of Sir Thomas ROE ('Tramite rectà. Ecclesia dei est navis in procella: Quare timetis ô vos vacillantis fidei? Etsi videtur dormire Christus: dum est in nave turbari potestis; perire numquam', with the signature 'Tho: ROE: E:A: Ser[enissim]i Brittaniarum monarchae primus omnium ad magnu[m] Mogol totius orientalis Indyae Regem: Denuo ad Portum Ottomanicam Legatus', Basle, 20 November 1628'), Pfalzgraf Friedrich Casimir, Michael Cornis of Pottvaradyia, teacher in the court of Count Peter Bethlen of Transylvania, Valerius Heitzmann, pastor of the French Church in Basle, Theodor Zuingenus, professor of the Old Testament at Basle University and pastor of the Cathedral, Magister Ludovicus Lucius, professor of organic logic and rector of Basle University, Guilhelmus Fabricius Hildanus (an annotation by Mülheuser notes 'Medicus & Chirurgus celeberrimus') and others, altogether approximately 110 inscriptions in Latin, French, Italian, Greek and Hebrew, decorated with 6 blazoned coats of arms, two pages with gouache drawings, the first showing a spider descending on its thread towards the head of a coiled snake (torn across), the second showing the armed figure of Marcus Curtius on horseback leaping into the pit (rubbed), a few early 19th-century inscriptions of Ludwig Fischer, blanks, in an album, oblong 8vo (100 x 150mm), (a number of leaves excised, some infantile pencil-trials, light soiling), original panelled calf gilt (worn). The brilliant diplomat Sir Thomas Roe, who was, as his inscription proudly reports, the first British ambassador to the Moghul court, was at the time of his entry in Mülheuser's album on his way back from an equally taxing embassy at the Sublime Porte. The inscriptions to Georg David Mülheuser, within a tightly limited milieu and temporality, lay emphasis on his charm, learning and youth.
