Provenance: Armorial bookplate of a Kern descendant; armorial ex-libris and shelfmark of Rudolf Ritter von Gutmann (Ms.734); shelfmark (Ser. nov. 2974), library stamps and de-accession stamp of Österreichische Nationalbibliothek.
The miniatures comprise: f.3 A couple dancing, with musicians (worn); f.9v The Bucintoro, inscribed by Arnold Birckmann, Padua, 7 November 1592; f.24 A man with a hound on the trail of a lady holding a wreath; f.30 An allegorical figure, apparently of a scholar rejecting wordly advancement (backed onto the page); f.43v A lady being led on horseback by a servant; f.45 A man leading a horse out of a stable; f.48v A scene of disembarkation on an island, with a motto from the Aeneid; f.74 A knight and saracen jousting, inscribed by Philipp Schöttel, Perugia, 4 May 1595; f.85 Perseus and Andromeda (cut from another leaf and window-mounted, the verso with a coat of arms); f.89v A couple in a horse-drawn sleigh. Four engravings (ff127-130) showing groups of figures in a Venetian setting originally made use of flaps which could be lifted to show alternative (generally more amorous) scenarios (only one flap still present).
The blazoned arms include, on f.1, those of the owner, together with a note by his heir Wolgang Franciscus Kern of his death on 19 November 1629; those of Johann Georg Baumgartner on f.56 are subordinated to a fine depiction of the young nobleman on horseback. The inscriptions, chiefly of German noblemen, are concentrated in Ingolstadt 1589-1591 and in Italy in the years 1591-94.
