Lot Essay

This gown was originally purchased from the David Weisz auction of the M.G.M. wardrobe on 17 May, 1970.

Judy Garland first appears wearing this dress in her role as Hannah Brown in the film in her dressing room following her performance of A Couple Of Swells with Fred Astaire [Don Hewes]. She continues to wear the dress during dinner at the Ziegfeld Follies restaurant. When Hewes is convinced to dance with Nadine [Ann Miller], Garland runs away and when she finds Hewes waiting outside her hotel room door, she closes the door on him.
