Lot Essay

Warhol first started wearing his now infamous silver wig in the 1960s. Although this seemed to be in an effort to physically transform himself - he also had cosmetic surgery on his nose in the 1950s - it seems he first wore a wig to cover up his advancing baldness. As the 1980s approached, these wigs seemed to grow ever more bold, culminating in a shock of white hair that seemed to be more of a fashion accessory than to hide baldness.
