DARWIN, Charles Robert (1809-1882). Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries visited during the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle round the World. London: John Murray, 1845
3 parts in 2 volumes, 8° (173 x 113mm). Part 1 with viii preliminaries comprising title, dedication, preface and contents leaves. 14 wood-engraved illustrations. (Title and dedication leaf browned, also stained at lower margin, marginal staining to some text leaves.) Contemporary green cloth, spines titled and numbered in gilt. Provenance: CAROLINE WEDGWOOD (signature, 'C.S. Wedgwood', on first title, repeated on pp. 177 and 337 [the opening pages of parts 2 and 3]).
This second (separate) edition was first published as vols. 12-14 of John Murray's Home and Colonial Library series; a second issue was then published in book form. As part of a cheap series, it was as Freeman says (p. 35), 'A miserable piece of printing in small type with mean margins', but it had the advantage of easy portability which must have appealed to Caroline. The original binding for the parts was of grey-buff card, and the publication price 7s. 6d. The parts issue is so rare that Freeman was only able to examine the first two parts, bound together in leather, and he was uncertain of the preliminaries. Hypothesising from the make-up of other parts in the series, he maintained that each part probably had its own contents leaf. In this copy there is a single contents leaf covering all three parts, and the collation matches that for the issue in book form. However, CAROLINE WEDGWOOD'S OWNERSHIP SIGNATURE ON THE OPENING LEAF OF EACH PART EFFECTIVELY PROVES THAT THIS IS THE RARE PARTS ISSUE. There is no evidence that this was a presentation copy, although of course it may have been. In a letter to John Murray, 28 June 1845, Darwin asked for 'one dozen copies at prime cost to give to my neighbours & some naturalists who have assisted me', but mentioning specifically only one 'one dozen copies at prime cost to give to my neighbours & some naturalists who have assisted me', but mentioning specifically only one for himself '& one for Mr Lyell'. Freeman records that 'he sent a copy of part I to Lyell in July, but none now survives at Cambridge'. Freeman 13. (2)
