Most of the photographs in this collection have identifying numbers and captions corresponding to images described in the Descriptive Catalog of Photographs of North American Indians (1877), compiled by William Henry Jackson, photographer for the Hayden Survey of the American West from 1870 to 1879. This catalog contains a numerical index of 1,094 images, a history of each tribe, a description of each photograph with Indian name, English name, tribe, and, in many cases, physical characteristics and biographical information.
The penciled numbers and captions beneath the mounted photographs are thought to be in Jackson's hand. The photographs in this collection may have been part of a master set of contact prints made by Jackson and used to compile portfolios offered for sale during Jackson's years (1880-1895) with his Denver studio, The Jackson Photographic Company. In Jackson's preface for the 1877 catalog he describes the images as "photographed direct from nature, and ... in nearly every case from the original plates, the exceptions being good copies from original daguerreotypes or photographs that are not now accessible." Dr. Hayden adds in a prefatory note that the collection "is undoubtedly the largest and most valuable one extant. It has been made at great labor and expense, during a period of about twenty-five years, and now embraces over one thousand negatives, representing no less than twenty-five tribes." The collection contains many portraits described by Hayden as "usually among the most prominent and influential members of their respective tribes."
The 157 images of this collection are numbers 7, 24, 25, 29, 36, 39, 41, 43, 44, 64, 68, 117, 120, 123, 124, 129, 130, 132, 155, 173, 176, 188, 195, 205, 217, 225, 228, 244, 253, 260, 262, 268, 270, 274, 277, 281, 283, 286, 288, 290, 293, 294, 297, 300, 308, 309, 313, 317, 319, 323, 325, 334, 338, 339, 341, 343, 345, 347, 369, 385, 387, 398, 400, 401, 402, 405, 407, 427, 436, 461, 463, 464, 465, 467, 480, 481, 482, 485, 486, 487, 511, 523, 526, 529, 530, 532, 533, 543, 548, 551, 555, 556, 623, 633, 657, 659, 677, 679, 688, 714, 715, 732, 734, 737, 740, 744, 752, 762, 765, 769, 775, 785, 786, 797, 800, 831, 895, 896, 899, 910, 944, 945, 947, 949, 955, 956, 968, 1001, 1005, 1006, 1007, 1009, 1017, 1027, 1030, 1042, 1044, 1054, 1057, 1058, 1061, 1062, 1063, 1081, 1083, 1084, 1085, 1087, 1089, 1090.
