Two complete sets of 50 Whitbread Inn signs, Series 1 and 2. Front side shows pictorial image to identify the Inn, back of tin is numbered and provides details about the Inn including location and designer of the sign. Inn signs were used in early times as a means of identification because few of the masses could read or write and a sign was a simple way to provide identification. The subject matter on Inn signs encompassed a broad range of subjects including heraldry, religion, occupations and trades, popular people, military, animals, sports and commonplace objects. Series 1 includes Marina Inn, The Princess, Warriors Gate, British Queen, Black Horse, William The Conqueror, Hare & Hounds, and North Pole. Series 2 includes The Sportsman, World's End, Cardinal's Error, Half Moon, The Cypress, We Three Loggerheads, Good Intent, and Red Rover. Size 3 in. (7.7 cm.) high, 2 in. (5.2 cm.) wide. Generally in fine condition. (2)
