Lot Essay

The Bal Bullier was one of the most fashionable night-spots in Montparnasse. The hall attracted crowds of people who would come simply to dance the tango, a scandalous dance at the time. The present drawing is a study for one of the dancing couples who appear in the large mural painting of the same title (Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris).
