AMBROGIO, Teseo (1469-1540). Introductio in chaldaicam lingua. Pavia: Giovanni Maria Simonetta, for the author, March 1539.
4o (205 x 150 mm). Criblé title-border with owls in foliage, the fable of the fox and the stork is illustrated in the lower left corner, title printed in red and black, 2 woodcut illustrations of musical instruments, many characters are xylographic or supplied in Manuscript in spaces left for the characters (many have not been supplied, some dampstaining at end). Contemporary limp vellum (portion of vellum of upper cover torn away, exposing paper paste-down).
FIRST EDITION, first issue with the colophon dated March 1539. An early printed book set with oriental types, including Chaldaic, Syriac, Babylonian, Armenian and others. This as been so difficult that "scattered throughout Ambrogio's text are references to the difficulties of getting it printed Signatures q-z of [this] copy were set by another printer in smaller type Ambrogio not only provided the types, but he dictated the text to his printer. Passages relevant to this process are Quoted in E. Nestle's 'ein nach Diktat arbeitender Drucker des 16. Jahrhunderts,' Centralblatt für Bibliothekswesen vol. 16 (1899), pp.r 493-494" (Mortimer).
