8o (230 x 170 mm). 71 illustrations by Mlle. Blanche Odin, ALL WITH ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR DECORATION, and with a duplicate set of the illustrations at end, uncolored and in outline. Contemporary black levant morocco by Carayon, front cover with a sunken panel with an embossed cuir-ciselé design of a bell ringing out Christmas chimes, the cords with sprigs of holly, an incense burner suspended from the bell ropes while lilies aid in balancing the composition, the design executed by M. Annoni, turn-ins gilt, doublures and endleaves of brocaded silk in two tones, original wrappers bound in; morocco-faced slipcase. Provenance: Carl J. Ulmann (bookplate, his sale Parke Bernet 15 April 1953, lot 183, Emil Offenbacher agent).

LIMITED EDITION, number 123 of 200 copies. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY LEMAITRE on the flyleaf: "'... Ne serait-ce pas une jolie charité, de faire que cette petite âme parte presque contente et se figurant avoir vécu?...' (page 61) Jules LeMaitre 13 novembre 1903." A very fine copy, and possibly unique with its duplicate set of the leaves, uncolored.
