A shadow box with a model of the sail/steam passenger vessel R.M.S. Britannia
A port view of the first Cunard ship S.S. Britannia, outward bound, under full steam. The hull of the ship is set on a paper sea which is painted and laid over a board. The hull is built up from the solid and painted with a white bottom, black topsides and a gold waist. The deck of the ship is fitted with anchors, figures on deck, ventilators, deck and cabin structures, ladders and cat walks, port holes, boats on davits, funnels trailing smoke, hatches and other details. Rigged with four masts and furled sails and standing and running rigging. The background is painted blue with clouds. In a mahogany glazed frame.
