Lot Essay
Born in the seaside town of Bolton, Lanchashire, England, Edward Moran's love of the sea began at an early age. Shortly after emigrating to the United States in 1844 he moved to Philadelphia and began studying under landscape painter Paul Weber and marine painter James Hamilton. Hamilton was particularly influential in Moran's focus on maritime subjects for which he was best known. The work of J.M.W. Turner was also of great influence as demonstrated in the light and mood of the present work to which the treatment of waves and clouds adds a particular drama.
