This canvas copies Jan Steen's painting in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. In the 19th Century it was believed that Jan Steen depicted his own family in the original picture: The girl holding a Saint John the Baptist doll in the foreground was thought to be his daughter Catharina, the boy with the golf club was said to be her brother Cornelis, and the woman on the right was believed to be their mother Grietje van Goyen.
