His cartoons appeared at times on over 22 newspapers all over the world. Born in 1925, Fritz Behrendt grew up in the midst of the political turmoil in Germany. In 1936 Behrendt made his first political drawing, depicting Hitler. At the opening of the Olympics in Berlin, Behrendt saw Hitler from up close. Back home, he made his first caricature. His family emigrated to the Netherlands in 1937. Near the end of World War II, he was imprisoned for his participation in the resistance against the German occupation. After the war, he was released and helped to found the left wing Dutch youth association. In 1947, in response to an appeal by the Yugoslav national youth organisation, Behrendt supported as commandant of an international youth brigade that helped the country's reconstruction. This brigade was seated in Yugoslavia and Behrendt was arrested by the Russians, when Yugoslavia's Tito decided to turn to the west instead of the Soviet Union. He was freed in 1950 owing to pressure exerted by the Dutch government. According to Behrendt it was in the East-Berlin prison he decided, after his release, to express himself through his pencil and to publish his political drawings. Back in the Netherlands he starts working for several papers and magazines. His drawings and caricatures are often rejecting stalinism and promoting the right to free speech. His goal is to expose 'the lies of political propaganda and to help keep peace in a world of free people'. Currently he is still working as a cartoonist for the newspaper industry.
