A RARE SMALL CARVED RED LACQUER FANGDING AND COVER ON INTEGRAL STAND
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The rectangular vessel raised on four mask-surmounted columnar legs rising from the integral base supported by ruyi feet, and carved in relief on the sides with taotie masks formed by detached elements, those on the long sides centered by a notched flange repeated at the corners, with a pair of bail handles rising from the rim, the cover with canted sides carved en suite below the cushion knop, all reserved on diaper grounds
5¼ in. (13.3 cm.) high

Lot Essay

This unusual carved red lacquer fangding is similar in size and style of decoration to an example without integral base from the collection of Dr. Alfred Sandak included in a sale of Ostasiatische Kunst, at Paul Cassirer and Hugo Helbing, Berlin, 8 December 1926, lot 155, pl. IX.
