The fall front carved with three immortals and an attendant carrying a large peach on a terrace in a lakeside retreat of pavilions and trees, the top and sides with panels of formally arranged foliate scroll, all within diaper borders and reserved on a diaper ground, the interior with a central open compartment flanked by two compartments with doors between two drawers above and a single drawer below, all carved with diaper pattern, the top mounted with gilt-metal carrying handles with ruyi-head terminals and knocking plates

Lot Essay

A portable case of this shape, size and date, with similarly arranged interior and detachable front, but decorated with dragons rather than the decoration of the present case, is illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Carved Lacquer Ware in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, 1971, no. 35. Another also carved with dragons pursuing flaming pearls amidst clouds in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, Oriental Lacquer Arts, Tokyo National Museum, 8 October - 23 November 1977, no. 580.
