The top cast in relief in the center with an Arabic inscription within a quadrilobed border surrounded by clouds, the sides of the cover and box decorated with lotus scroll, all reserved on a ring-punched ground, the box raised on four ruyi supports

Lot Essay

The inscription may be read, 'Praise be to God'.

A group of bronze vessels for the scholar's desk which are decorated with panels enclosing Arabic inscriptions reserved on a ring-punched ground is illustrated in Emperor, Scholar, Artisan, Monk, Sydney L. Moss Ltd., London, p. 265, nos. 118-21. They include two pear-shaped vases with handles, a cylindrical censer and a circular box and cover. They are dated as probably late 17th-early 18th century.
