The Romulans, of course, were inspired by Earth's ancient Roman Empire. The Romulans were ruled by the senate, under the leadership of the imperious Praetor. Unfortunately, in Star Trek: Nemesis, the entire senate and the praetor himself were annihilated by agents of the sinister Shinzon.
