Lot Essay
The bridge of the Starship Enterprise-D represented a dramatic depature for Star Trek design. Series creator Gene Roddenberry did not want his new ship's bridge to be a mere copy of previous work. Rather, he wanted it to embody a philosophy he called "Technology Unchained." He wanted his new ship to be both elegant and simple, to demonstrate that technology could serve to improve the quality of life, rather than to enslave its users. Andrew Probert's concept for the Enterprise-D, under the supervision of production designer Herman Zimmerman, has become an icon of futuristic design.
