JOHN HARRIS (c.1667-1719)
Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca. Or, a Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels. Consisting of above six hundred of the most authentic writers. Revised by Dr John Campbell. London: T. Woodward [et al.], 1744-1748. 2 volumes, 2° (413 x 252mm). Titles printed in red and black, privilege leaf facing title of vol. I, 61 engraved plates and maps, many folding double-page, by and after Emmanuel Bowen, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. (A few tears, one affecting text, some browning and off-setting, 5Z and 10E-10H in vol. I and 3L in vol. II misbound.) Contemporary calf, modern speckled calf spines, gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-pieces in two, red speckled edges (rebacked, somewhat scuffed and rubbed, skilful repairs to corners and board edges).
THE SECOND EDITION OF HARRIS'S ENCYCLOPAEDIC HISTORY OF VOYAGES. Originally published in 1705, the enlarged 1744-48 edition, regarded as 'the most complete' (Hill), is notable for its maps, which include two world maps, five of the Americas and Captain Abel Tasman's 'Complete Map of the Southern Continent' -- THE FIRST ENGLISH MAP OF NEW HOLLAND. Often regarded as having been prepared in competition with Churchill's Collection of Voyages, Harris's is rather a 'history of all voyages and travels then known' (NMM). To the original collection are added accounts of voyages completed since the first publication: Christopher Middleton to Hudson's Bay, 1741-42; Bering to the Northeast, 1725-26; Woodes Rogers's circumnavigation, 1708-11; Clipperton and Shevlocke's circumnavigation, 1719-22; Roggeveen to the Pacific, 1721-33; and Lord Anson's various travels, 1740-44. Hill 775; cf. NMM 34; Sabin 30482 (first edition). (2)
