The artist should read Karl (Carlos) Nebel (1805-1855).

The watercolours are the models for four lithographs in Nebel's Voyage pittoresque et archeologique dans la partie la plus interessante du Mexique, Paris, 1836.

We are grateful to Dr Renate Loeschner for the above information.

Lot Essay

The present four watercolours were included in the portfolio of Catherwood watercolours which descended from Catherwood's friend John Davies to the present owner, and, while these four sheets have always been presumed to be Catherwood ('The sketches of the Mexican natives in costume which you and I have are quite different from his normal architectural water colours, but as they come from the same portfolio which bears his name, I can only presume they are his' (private comminication from Davies's great grandson, 1 Dec. 1960), their subjects and Spanish inscriptions suggest they may have been acquired in Mexico by Catherwood from a local costumbrista artist.
