Provenance
According to the letter of provenance which accompanies the wallet, it was previously the property of Wing Commander W.E.G. Beauforte-Greenwood, with whom Lawrence had worked on the development of the seaplane tender from 1929-35. In late April 1935 Beauforte-Greenwood and a fellow officer lunched with Lawrence at Hythe, and presented him with a pair of inscribed candlesticks as a personal memento of their association (cf. Letters, ed. M. Brown (1988), p.534; the wallet may have been a reciprocal gift). The letter of provenance continues, 'in the 1950s Beauforte-Greenwood asked me to place some unique T.E. Lawrence items privately ... in appreciation, Wing Commander Beauforte-Greenwood gave the writer this wallet ... W. McDonald-Booth. October 1st 1992'; sale, Phillips, Bath, 5 October 1992, lot 318.
