Lot Essay

With the advent of the Spanish Conquistadores in the 15th and 16th centuries and their capture of the Inca Empire, emeralds of superior quality began to filter from Colombia to Europe. Thus, Colombian emeralds of important size, color, and clarity were originally almost exclusively the property of Royalty or the aristocracy.
