Lot Essay

The present painting depicts the railway line which ran along the base of the volcanic crag upon which Stirling Castle was built. In 1846, the Stirling to Dunfermline Line and the Stirlingshire Midland Junction Railway were incorporated into the London and North Western Railway. It is difficult to distinguish which line MacNeal has depicted but the locomotives are certainly of LNWR outline.

We are grateful to Christopher Littledale for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
