MORGAN, Charles (1894-1958). The Gunroom. London: A. & C. Black, 1919. 8°. Blue cloth (spine faded, slight damp staining to back cover). PRESENTATION COPY, 'To the Lady Ottoline Morrell. In gratitude for her interest in his first book, by the naval parts of which he stands to-day, though the love story is to be regarded as a youthful indiscretion. From Charles Morgan. March 15 1934.' FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the letter 'n' missing from p.78, line 32.
AN INSCRIBED COPY OF THE AUTHOR'S SUPPRESSED FIRST NOVEL, based on his experiences as a midshipman in the Royal Navy's Atlantic Fleet. Morgan's book exposed the unduly harsh treatment meted out to midshipmen in the Edwardian navy and, though not actually banned, it had a very limited circulation and is notably absent from the lists of his works to be found in his later books. However, he always stood by the book's portrayal of the hardships of naval life, as the inscription in Lady Ottoline's copy makes clear. On the outbreak of war, Morgan
rejoined the Royal Navy and saw action in the Antwerp expedition.
MORGAN, Charles. Portrait in a Mirror. London: Macmillan, 1929. 8°. Original green ribbed cloth, with dust-jacket (horizontal fold, chipped). FIRST EDITION OF MORGAN'S FIRST BESTSELLING NOVEL.
MORGAN, Charles. The Fountain. London: Macmillan, 1932. 8°. Original blue ribbed cloth, with dust-jacket (horizontal fold, spine darkened and chipped). PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the title-page, 'For the Lady Ottoline Morrell. Charles Morgan October 7 1932.' FIRST EDITION of Morgan's Hawthornden Prize-winning novel, based on his wartime experiences in the Netherlands.
MORGAN, Charles (1894-1958). Epitaph on George Moore. London: Macmillan, 1935. 8°. Frontispiece and plate, wood-engraved title panel (in style of Reynolds Stone) printed in grey. Original grey marbled paper boards, white linen spine. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed 'The Lady Ottoline Morrell with the homage of the author Charles Morgan. November 22. 1935.' With autograph letter from the author, dated 'Nov.23 1935', one page, 8vo., in envelope pasted to the front pastedown. Morgan published this essay in place of the full biography which Moore himself had hoped he would write.
Ottoline Morrell became very attached to Morgan, who was twenty years her junior, and when he went to Italy for six months in 1933 she wrote him weekly letters, which she did not post (Seymour, pp.411-12). (3)
