Lot Essay

Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell found their cottage La Bergère in the South of France in 1928. Located on land attached to the 17th century château of Fontcreuse, just north of Cassis, it was set amongst vineyards and olive groves. Grant's studio on the first floor looked south across the sloping landscape, and both artists painted the view through the open window many times.

We are very grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in preparing the catalogue entries for lots 31, 33-35.
