KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI (1760-1849) Furyu shinpan gobantsuzuki [A New Edition of a Fashionable Pentaptych]
An ambitious panoramic scene showing the preparations for the New Year in a Green House, in the right-hand panel can be seen the kitchen where a sign reads hi no hoshin [Beware of Fire], the next panel depicts maids polishing lacquer trays, whilst in the background can be glimpsed a large mural of a phoenix which had previously been featured in a print of the Ogi-ya by Eisho and also in Utamaro's Seiro ehon-ninju gyoji.
In the centre panel a small garden can be seen, further to the left, tea is being prepared on a hibachi while a customer has his hand massaged by a blind masseur. Above them is the house's shrine decorated with Daruma dolls. In the left-hand panel geisha on a balcony watch servants delivering goods to the store rooms, signed Eshi Hokusai ga, published in 1811 by Moriya Jihei whose seal also appears on the sake barrels and some of the girls' robes, good impression, colours and condition, a small area of staining at the join of the second and third sheets Oban tate-e (5)
