Lot Essay

According to factory records camera no. 51 was sold to George Schneiderman in 1925 or before. Schneiderman (1894-1964) was a cameraman working for Fox studios and is credited as cinematographer on many of John Ford's great silent films, including 3 Bad Men (US1926) and Four Sons (US1928). By 1935 the camera had been sold to London Film Productions, the company set up in 1933 by Alexander Korda which was responsible for some of the most important British films of the era.

The photograph shows Archduke Leopold of Austria (second from right), taking part in a scene from Four Sons with Earle Foxe and Francis X. Bushman Jnr. John Ford is seated and George Schneiderman stands by the Mitchell camera. (Photo courtesy: Photoplay Productions)
