NORTH AMERICA - FORLANI, PAOLO (fl.1560-71).
Il disegno dicopero della nova Francia. Venice: Bolognino Zaltieri, 1566. Engraved map of North America. 274 x 399mm, trimmed, with extended margins (Some loss along central fold, some discolouration to centre of map.)
A VERY RARE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT MAP, here in its second state, being one of the earliest separate printed depictions of North America, and the only form by the Lafreri School. It is also the earliest acquirable map to feature the mythical Strait of Anian, running between this continent and Asia, the origin of the depiction being Giacomo Gastaldi's c.1561 world map. Gastaldi was also Forlani's source for the depiction of the west coast and the rendering of the Pacific, which places Japan in mid-ocean. Significantly, the map represents one of the first occasions that the name Canada appeared in print. The form of the east coast is heavily influenced by Gastaldi's 1546 world map, and the designation of the continent as New France, was inspired, as cited in the title cartouche, by the nouissima navigatione dè Franzesi - the second voyage of Jacques Cartier, 1535-6. A curious feature is the errant placement of the St.Lawrence River (R.S.Lorenzo), and the location of Ochelaga, the future site of Montré‚al, on another river; both misconceptions derived from Giambattista Ramusio's Delle navigationi et viaggi. The map also presents Spanish discoveries in the southwest such as the Sierra Nevada Range and the discoveries of Fransico Vàsquez de Coronado. Forlani engraved the first state of this map the year before, and it is thought that Zaltieri acquired the plates in late 1565 or early 1566 to prepare this second state. Burden no.33; Tooley:1939 no.80, Woodward:1990 no.37.02, Woodward:1994 pp.29-30, Woodward:1996 watermark 33.
